Brakence latest single “Venus flytrap”
By IJR (@ONLY.IJR)
Ohio artist Brakence (@brakence) has got to be my favorite underground gem. Over the past three years i’ve been wowed and amazed by the creative ability that the artist seems to possess, taking stand-out elements from some of my favorite genres like pop and folk music, and effectively combining them with elements of hip-hop as well as glitchy hyperpop.
This time around Brakence comes at his latest single in a more pop-friendly approach, a sentiment that is reflected through the track’s writing. On “Venus flytrap” Brakence delivers one of his catchiest hooks over production that is reminiscent of bedroom pop and almost punk-pop, but not quite. Overall the track feels somewhat indie, but at the same time well executed, an aspect that felt common through Brakence’s older music. Finally, I will say that while I enjoyed this single quite a lot, the second half is the track’s worst moment, not so much because it lacks in quality, but because it feels like a completely different song, and it tends to run for longer than desired creating an awkward listen after a certain point.
