FUNERAL’S NEW TAPE “gorepack” IS A BLOODBATH OF ENJOYMENT

BY TRE

I once read a message in Funeral’s Discord server, and it was along the lines of, “What genre even is Funeral?” and every person who responded gave a different answer than other responders, and that should speak volumes on how unique the 23 year-old North Carolina artist and producer is. Some say he is hyperpop, others say he is more digicore centered, and while they are definitely influences, Funeral simply calls himself a “rapper”. Funeral over the last year has proven again and again that he is one of the most consistent and forward-thinking artists out now, and “gorepack” just expands upon his amazing discography. “gorepack” is the newest tape from Funeral, and it showcases his ability to be self-produced, versatile, and ultimately a pioneer in his sound. Across all 14 tracks there is not a dull moment, which is something not many artists could accomplish. The sound on the tape almost encompasses every past Funeral release and merges it into one, creating this feeling of familiarity while also building and improving on top of it. The contrast between the grotesque, and almost horrorcore-like lyrics and the energetic and fun instrumentals creates a sense of something that’s almost sarcastic for the listener, like Funeral is enjoying and making fun of the actions he is saying. Once again while definitely hyperpop and digicore influenced, Funeral somehow manages to spin the sound in his own way that isn’t possible to put a label on. The song that defines the tape is “blood everywhere”, a quick paced and bouncy track featuring digital production with many different vocal deliveries from Funeral, ranging from an almost remorseful tone to a high pitched, glitched and gated singing. Anyone who listens to this 30-minute tape will surely be in for a ride, as this sounds like nothing else out now. Fun and gruesome, “gorepack” is yet another great addition to Funeral’s discography.
