PRENTISS INTERVIEW WITH UNDRGRND STRS MEDIA

By: @only.ijr

Lately I’ve been taking the time to really just sit with the new music that I’ve been digging, so that I can form the best opinions before bringing them here to this platform. In the same process I got curious and reached out to homie Prentiss (@1prentiss), who was most recently featured on Skrillex’s most recent album “Don’t get too close,” to talk about what his experience has been like. The following is a conversation that we had while reflecting on that time.

IJR: Hi Prentiss, so I sort of have an idea of how this collab (3am) came to be, thanks to what you’ve posted on social media, but could you give us some backstory for the song, and what your thoughts were going into it?

Prentiss: (Skrillex) hit me in January of 2021, at that point I was just putting music on Spotify just to show my friends & family. I was stoked that a legend was that interested in the music that I made after school in my bedroom. When he told me that the song was going on the album, I was genuinely confused, knowing he could have any pop star on the hook & they’d get it back to him that same day.

IJR: I know that the demo he came across for this song is from 2020. It’s crazy that he saw that much potential in it. How did that make you feel?

Prentiss: It really put a fire under me, & it's the main reason I started taking music seriously. It also showed me that making meaningful music is far more important than making perfect music cause that hook I sent him was far from perfect.

IJR: And all of this was way past your initial blow up with october so to hear that this moment is what sparked you is really cool to hear. Did you grow up listening to skrillex or was his music something you learned to love after the fact?

Prentiss: When I was younger I used to crank Minecraft montages with skrillex’s music. I definitely grew up on his bigger pop records as well, but realistically I didn’t get into his more hardcore edm records until I saw him live. Seeing him live was the first edm show I’d ever been to, & it sparked a love for the genre.

IJR: Looking back on all the interactions you’ve had with celebrities, and industry giants, where does meeting skrillex rank?

Prentiss: Meeting skrillex for the first time was sick because we could hold a conversation. I wouldn’t say the big people in the industry are necessarily egotistical, but they struggle having convos that don’t involve their music. Even a good amount of smaller artists struggle with that but skrillex was a real person that said real shit & had a real personality.

IJR: I’ve definitely heard of skrillex being a really down to earth artist, and I love that about him. Is there anything specific that you’ve learned and applied to your career or personal life since becoming involved with this project?

Prentiss: Just the amount of time & effort it takes to make A1 music. It’s not some shit that you can throw together in a bedroom in 1 day. It showed me that being a “fast worker” only hurts your music in the long run. Work until you're satisfied, don't work until they are satisfied. “They” being fans, labels, friends, ect.

IJR: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to the kids making music rn that feel like they aren’t taken seriously because of their age, or because their image doesn’t look like what the typical industry artist does

Prentiss: Just take time to build your craft, the respect takes a while to earn, but sticks forever. Don’t chase approval from listeners, friends, fans ect. Just always keep making the music that you’d want to hear, eventually other people will want to hear it too.

Thank you for your time Prentiss, we appreciate you.
