LET US PUT YOU ON: CORRIDOS TUMBADOS

You know I like to think that as a Mexican-American person, I have a pretty unique perspective of what art looks like in all aspects of the world. North American, and latino culture currently seem to have a grip on the world unlike anything else. When you think of latino culture in music, your mind instantly goes to one of three places: Reggaeton, Banda, or Salsa… I guess lol, but you might be surprised to find out that there’s a latin scene out there that’s currently experiencing a massive boom. That scene of course would be the “Corridos tumbados” scene, coming directly from, of all places, Los Angeles, California. Being a direct subgenre of the “Corridos” genre, corridos tumbados embodies a more youthful take on the corridos, adopting elements of rap music, such as trap beats, and even rapid fire flows, which in my opinion are often done more tastefully than in some rap songs! While the subgenre’s name was popularized and coined in 2019 by the artist Natanael Cano, the current boom we’re experiencing is in part thanks to the rising artist known as Peso Pluma, the 23 year old singer from Jalisco, Mexico,  who single handedly managed to knock Bad Bunny from the #1 spot of the Spotify most listened artists list (although some would argue Benito himself had a hand in that as well). While I can’t say for sure if this boom is concrete evidence that this is the wave that’s going to the top, I can say that the music is hella fun to listen to, as it’s a wave that’s yet to be commercialized or bastardized. Meaning that since the style isn’t mainstream world wide, the underground is still experimenting, and coming up with creative ways to innovate on the traditional format, and that’s exactly why I'm excited for the genre’s future.
