CALIFORNIA ARITST KOI IS HERE WITH A NEW PROJECT, “IF ANYTHING”
You know it’s truly amazing how consistent California creative Koi (@ripcoye) has managed to keep himself. Single after single, album after album, Koi’s managed to give us fully stacked project after project in a pretty short amount of time. This time around, Koi’s given us the thirteen track project “If anything,” a project that switches things up a little, while keeping intact all of the things that make Koi the unique artist he is. One of the biggest changes on this project comes from the style of production which Koi chooses this time around, opting for a more sample based take on the laid back trap beats that he typically frequents. What I mean by that is that on this project you’re more likely to hear melodies that emulate or are directly lifted from soul soul music, and effectively come to sound as nostalgic, or reflective in a way. Anyway, this is a cool way to keep things fresh sonically, and I always enjoy seeing Koi continue to reinvent himself, adding new paint to his canvas through every album. Most songs follow a similar structure, with slight exceptions, but morse often than not you’ll hear Koi in usual element, musing over a romantic interest, dishing out often hollow sounding remarks of wealth, pondering his ever changing status as a musical influencer, and of course the occasional line about his love of cannabis. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it I guess, but I do wonder if the rest of Koi’s fanbase ever gets even a little tired of him repeating himself in a way… That’s not to say everything Koi makes follows the exact same subject matter, however, a lot of the song’s do, especially on this project. I say all of this not to shame Koi or his listeners, but simply to throw out the idea that aside from the singles, this project is starting to feel just a little stale. It’s cool, it's still a cool sound to me, but maybe i’m having a little “Koi fatigue” and need to let it sit before jumping back in.
