USING YOUR PAST TO BUILD YOUR FUTURE

I got a quick one for you guys today, a bit of advice that I’ve picked up just kind of just observing rapper Jack Harlow. Just last year Jack was on the run of a lifetime being one of the most promising and exciting rookie artists to emerge in a long time, and it all came crashing down just as fast as it came up…or so that’s what the internet would have you think. You see, at the peak of his success, Jack dropped his debut album, “Come home the kids miss you,” a project that was met with a ton of push back, and criticism from the public that had previously shown him a ton of love. Anyway, the crazy part isn’t that the public didn’t love his project, I mean if you deliver mediocre work, backlash is almost promised, but the thing I think all artists can learn out of this predicament, comes from the way Jack handled it all. Rather than spend the time arguing with upset fans, backpedaling, or making excuses, Jack Harlow thanked the fans that enjoyed it, and went straight to work. This past week Jack gave us a surprise project that captured the energy that the fans love, and ultimately delivered something worth listening to. The moral of the story is that it’s not about how you justify your missteps as a creative, rather it’s all about how you make up for them. Not only did Jack keep his mouth shut, but he actually took the time to listen to the fans and chose to create with their feedback in mind. So artists, if you learn one thing from this, learn that mistakes are impossible to avoid, and making up for them is essential for a good redemption arc.
