GREEK TAKES ON A MORE TRADITIONAL SOUND WITH “VIRGINIA CREEPER”

It’s been a minute since I’ve written about the underground, alt indie legend by the name of Greek (@idkgreek), and this time, we’ve got a fiery one for you. If you’re unfamiliar with Greek and his music, the way that I always like to describe it as experimental indie rock with a hint of r&b, but also a hint of rap, and occasionally, even hyperpop. In other words, Greek is the kind of artist that’s hard to put into a box or label, and I’m very much reminded of the title that New York artist Hadji Gaviota placed on himself of “left-handed music”. Left handed music being music that generally makes sense, but is considered slightly unconventional for one reason or another.

“VIRGINIA CREEPER,” sees Greek taking on a more traditional sound that is incredibly funky, with an instrumentation that seems to pull from a more vintage sound. There’s no simple way to put it, but something about the way that the percussion, bass line, and occasional synth or two groove on this track creates a very exciting listen. I’m not sure if “vintage,” is the right word, or even if that’s what Greek was aiming for, but there’s elements in the production itself that easily take it there, I mean there’s even a synth line that comes on a few times that very much reminds me of what Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones were doing back in the 80’s when funk and disco were very much the top influence in popular music. Although I can spot those influences and similarities to popular music, there's still plenty of things that make this song very “Greek,” very “left-handed” in nature, from Greek’s vocal performance, to the way that the track is structured, and I certainly can’t exclude the epic synth outro and solo that totally flips the song on its head when you least expect it. This one’s a fun listen overall, and I really wanna encourage more artists to strive to make more music like this, and by that I mean music that undeniably has a touch of themselves and their influences sonically injected into it. I think we’d be way cooler for it.
